Vega
Study Center Summary
The
Setting
The Vega Study
Center, in the heart of old Oroville, is fronted with lawns
and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. Oroville means
"the city of gold," and was so named because fabulous
fortunes in gold were discovered along the winding canyons
of the nearby Feather River during the wild West days. Ishi,
the last wild Indian in North America, sought refuge in Oroville,
and the area is still rich with Indian and pioneer history.
Modern, comfortable, and clean, Vega offers a friendly, family-style
environment for relaxed study in its one-story, three-wing
facility. Vega is a one hour and fifteen minutes drive north
of Sacramento and three hours from San Francisco. On the free
weekends during the two-week or longer courses, students like
to bike along the river and backroads, refresh in the local
swimming holes, browse in antique stores, or go to Chico,
a nearby college town, to enjoy the cafes, nightclubs, boutiques,
and cultural activities.
The
Food
The Vega Study
Center is fortunate to be in the rich agricultural valley
of Northern California. Within a short drive from Vega you'll
find America's most productive organic brown rice farms, and
organic vegetable and fruit farms are abundant. We compliment
this local organic produce with our own homemade miso, soy
sauce, umeboshi, mochi, pickles, and other homemade staples.
Daily meals are created by conscious and caring kitchen staff
members who have your health and well-being in mind while
handling and preparing the food. Meals are macrobiotic vegetarian
with optional fish dishes served from time to time.
